We have a total of 18 participating bars and restaurants throughout downtown which means no two Wednesdays have to look the same. Sunset Sips is the perfect excuse to grab a drink, catch up with friends, and discover your new favorite spots.

Today is the Big Day of Giving, a regional fundraising campaign organized by the Sacramento Region Community Foundation. This year, our sister 501(c)(3) organization, the Downtown Sacramento Foundation (DSF), is proud to continue supporting the vision of Friends of Sacramento Chinatown Square to help reestablish Chinatown as a hub for community, wellness, and thriving local businesses.

Situated between some of downtown’s busiest districts, Chinatown holds a deep history that helped shape Sacramento into the city it is today. The Chinatown Square Illumination Project is part of a larger vision to make the neighborhood feel more welcoming and vibrant through thoughtful lighting and pedestrian friendly improvements inspired by the area’s cultural roots.

Picture glowing lanterns overhead, brighter public spaces, and gateway enhancements that make the neighborhood feel inviting both day and night. DSF is raising funds to launch phased enhancements to the space and help lay the foundation for what’s to come, and you have the opportunity to contribute to making this vision a reality.

Big Day of Giving is a reminder that small contributions can help shape the future of the places that matter to our communities. Every donation helps uplift a cultural legacy in Sacramento’s core that has long been under recognized while helping bring Chinatown’s next chapter to life.

Looking for a go-to spot to break up your day? Grab lunch, take a stroll, or swing by in the morning for fresh, locally grown fruits and veggies. Whether you’ve got time to spare or just need a quick reset, these markets make it easy to step into something a little more lively.

Capitol Mall Farmers’ Market (Wednesdays)
Wednesdays from April 29 through October 28 (excluding July 1)

Head to Capitol Mall Greens between 5th and 6th Streets from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Pick up local farm-fresh produce straight from the source, grab lunch from local food and beverage vendors, and take a seat outside. It’s an easy stop just steps from the office. CalFresh/EBT benefits are accepted with support from Alchemist Community Development Corporation, making fresh food more accessible for everyone.

Bodega Market at 910 I Street (Thursdays)
Thursdays from April 30 through September 24 (excluding July 2)

The Bodega Market brings a little more energy to your lunch break from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM. Expect live music, local vendors, and activities that make you want to stick around and soak in the sun. Settle into the Book Nook, a shaded outdoor reading space with books to borrow or donate (summer reading list here), or join Market Movement with Yoga Moves Us for a 30-minute midday stretch every other Thursday. Plus, if you’re feeling philanthropic, every Thursday we accept weekly donations to support local organizations, First Step Communities and Front Street Animal Shelter.

Downtown Sacramento comes alive when people show up—and entertainment zones give everyone a reason to stay awhile.

During special events, you can grab a drink from a local bar, restaurant, or winery and take it to go in a fun branded cup as you explore (think: New Orleans, Bourbon Street party style ). Suddenly, the streets feel different—more open, more social, more alive.

Entertainment zones in Ali Youssefi Square and the Convention Center Zone help create that energy. The zones support local businesses, draw people downtown, and turn a regular outing into something worth exploring.

A few ground rules to keep it fun and safe for everyone :

• Bring your ID and keep your 21+ wristband on
• When you order a drink, ask for a to-go cup
• Keep your cup with you and toss it when you’re done
• Don’t take your drink into another bar or outside the entertainment zone

Experience your first entertainment zone: The Visit Sacramento Fan Zone is taking place in Ali Youssefi Square on March 27th from 1 p.m. – 7 p.m. and March 28th from 11 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. One of downtown’s first entertainment zones. Plan on seeing the atmosphere filled with fans, music, and and good vibes.

Here are some of the biggest takeaways:

Competitiveness is a choice – Downtowns don’t become competitive by default. They become competitive when leaders choose to invest, align, and act with purpose. If Sacramento wants to be a competitive city nationally, it starts with our downtown.

Safety is foundational – Our safety initiative will focus on private security patrols, stronger coordination with law enforcement, and smarter use of technology. Because a safe and welcoming downtown isn’t aspirational; it’s foundational.

Placemaking shapes perception – Lighting improvements along K Street. Enhancements to Capitol Mall. Programming in key corridors and gathering spaces. Our environmental management initiative recognizes that perception drives participation, and that well-lit streets and green grass matter.

Economic diversification creates possibility – A downtown that isn’t built for the 9-to-5 is actually a downtown that works year round. More residents. More entertainment. More jobs. By investing in things like mixed-income housing and higher education, our economic opportunity initiative helps build a district where energy flows well beyond the workday.

Let’s learn from other cities – Examples from San Francisco, Phoenix, Dallas, and Modesto show us that progress follows intentional leadership. The cities that are thriving now are the ones that diversified, invested in placemaking and safety, and made deliberate choices about their future.

Walkable cities make sense – Our keynote speaker Jeff Speck reminded us that walkability is a competitive advantage. When streets are designed for people, not just cars, everything benefits: the environment, businesses, public safety, and quality of life.

The next decade is already underway – Investments of all sizes, from our new City Manager to developments in the Railyards to SacRT transit expansions, prove that downtown’s next decade isn’t theoretical – it’s happening now.

It’s always inspiring to see Sacramento leaders and change-makers come together to unite around a shared vision for our city’s future. The next ten years start now.

Analog hobbies – Think book clubs, run clubs (we hear Slow Sac Run Club is pretty great), card collecting. Anything that doesn’t require refreshing a feed.

Taking the light rail – Alleviate some of the stress of your daily commute, and do some good for the environment while you’re at it. For more information, see our transit guide here.

Taking risks – Say yes to things before it’s convenient. There is no “perfect moment.”

Being engaged in local government – Attend city council meetings, join your neighborhood board, give public comment. Make your voice heard.

Being a tourist in your own city – Take some time to enjoy neighborhoods you’ve never explored, museums you’ve skipped, and local businesses you always drive by but never visit.

Eating lunch with coworkers – Close the laptop and remember there is a person on the other side of your inbox.

OUTs

Perfection over progress – Waiting until something is flawless could mean waiting forever. Try, try and fail, and try again.

Following the status quo – Just because “this is how it’s always been done” doesn’t mean there isn’t room for some improvement. It’s okay to evolve.

Doom scrolling – Stay informed, but don’t let it drain you. Log off when it becomes too much.

Wanting a village but not wanting to be a villager – Community doesn’t just show up at your doorstep, you have to participate. Our community events page is a great place to look for inspiration.

Downplaying achievements – You can be proud without being arrogant. Own the work you’ve done to get to where you are.

It’s important to invest in where you live: emotionally, socially, and geographically. Show up as you are and put energy into the people and places around you.

You’ll easily find out that walking down K Street has become its own unique experience. It’s perfect for snapping a photo under the changing lights, celebrating after a game at spots like the Darling Aviary, Kodaiko Ramen & Bar, or taking the family skating at the Ice Rink. The lights are turning everyday outings into something worth remembering, see for yourself.

We, Downtown Sacramento Partnership, led this project and it isn’t just about lights; it’s about creating spaces that feel safe, welcoming, and alive. By weaving creativity with smart design, these LEDs bring that vision to life in the heart of our city.  

As the area becomes more vibrant in the evenings, more people walk, bike, or take public transit. That energy supports local businesses and helps build a stronger sense of community where we feel safe and proud of our city.  

The lighting system honors K Street’s rich history, echoing its iconic marquee signs from the golden age of theater. With a modern twist of dynamic, colorful illumination, the new lights connect Sacramento’s past with its present, creating a space that feels both familiar and fresh.
